  2. Variations on a Rococo Theme in A Op 33 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky
  3. Scheherazade Op 35 - Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov

The name Tchaikovsky prompts memories of alluring romantic melodies and powerful orchestral works and his Sleeping Beauty Suite shows him off as the great master of ballet music. Mozart was a great influence on him and this other side of Tchaikovsky’s style can be heard in his charming and elegant Variations on a Rococo Theme, performed here by captivating cellist Leonard Elschenbroich.

Based on the stories and themes of the Arabian Nights, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade brings a distinctly oriental feel to the evening. This is one of the most colourful, evocative and descriptive scores in all classical music, guaranteed to capture the imagination of anyone who hears it.
