Following his triumph in BBC Young Musician 2016 we’re thrilled to welcome local hero Sheku Kanneh-Mason to the Royal Concert Hall for his Nottingham Classics debut. We’re doubly delighted because he comes to us in the company of the CBSO’s phenomenal new Music Director, also making her first appearance here. Together they’ll be performing Shostakovich’s urgent First Cello Concerto, which, although written during the Soviet thaw under Kruschev, gets its restless energy from the composer’s memories of harder times.

Sharply contrasting moods colour the rest of this concert, with Rachmaninov’s haunting opener carrying the listener over dark waters to the mythical resting place for the departed. Its ominous emotional swell is a far cry from the gentle poignancy of Offenbach’s miniature for solo cello and strings – aptly championed by cellist Jacqueline du Pré – and the exuberance of Tchaikovsky’s magical ballet score to Sleeping Beauty. Scene after scene reveals the composer’s imagination firing at white heat, his dramatic flair and gift for melody never more brilliantly realised.

Free pre-concert talk, 6.30pm in the auditorium: Stephen Maddock, CEO of the CBSO, in conversation.
