Thaxted Festival: John Lill

John Lill won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1970 - the start of a stellar international career. He is particularly admired for his interpretations of Beethoven, whose complete cycle of sonatas he has played several times in the UK, US and Japan. His recordings include, in addition to the Beethoven cycle, all of Prokofiev’s piano sonatas. John has been the President of the Thaxted Festival for the last 30 years. It will be a delight to welcome him back to add to his fantastic sequence of recitals for the Festival - and a privilege to hear him play the ‘Appassionata’. Beethoven composed this as he was coming to terms with his deafness; he himself considered it to be the greatest of all his sonatas.

Following this concert, there will be morris and country dancing outside, as part of the church’s Patronal Festival. The famous Abbots Bromley Horn Dance will take place at approximately 10.15pm.
