  1. Vespro della Beata Vergine, 'Vespers' (1610) - Claudio Monteverdi

Monteverdi's glorious 1610 Vespers combine virtuosic and expressive solo writing with magnificent choruses, all designed to show off the composer's range of skill and styles. The Durham Singers and young singers from Durham Johnston School Chamber Choir and Durham County Youth Choir are joined by soloists from the renowned early music group I Fagiolini, and the concert is conducted by I Fagiolini's director Robert Hollingworth.

Monteverdi’s music calls for an exotic orchestra of early instruments, including cornetts, sackbuts, dulcian, theorbo and recorders; the orchestra for this performance is made up of the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble and the Monteverdi String Band.
