Special soirée musicale impromptu to celebrate the 10th anniversary of MCS with the youngest winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 17, in 2015
Jonathan Roozeman (cello)
Jonathan Roozeman, born in Helsinki, 1997, started playing at the age of six, and has been studying at the Sibelius Academy Youth Department since 2009, initially with Hannu Kiiski and currently with Prof. Martti Rousi, and since 2016 studies at the Kronberg Academy in the class of Frans Helmerson. His list of accomplishments is impressive.
He is a winner and participant of numerous major international competitions and festivals:
- won the 6th prize in the International Tchaikovsky Competition as the youngest candidate, 2015
- reached the semi-finals in the 3rd Gaspar Cassadó International VioloncelloCompetition (Hachioji, Japan)
- one of 3 finalists in the Prémio Internacional Suggia Competition, 2013 (Porto, Portugal)
- Special prize at the 5thPaulo Cello Competition, 2013 (Helsinki, Finland)
- 2nd prize at the Dutch National CelloCompetition as the youngest candidate ever, 2012
- 1st prize the Dombrovskis Cello Competition, 2012 (Riga, Latvia)
- 2nd prize at the 4th National Cello Competition, 2012 (Amsterdam, Holland)
- performed at the Middelburg, Kuhmo, Oulainen and Savonlinna festivals, 2012
- 1st prize and 3 special prizes in the Young Musician Competition, 2009 (Tallinn, Estonia)
- 1st prize at the Young Cellist Competition in Jämsänkoski, 2008
In 2015 he was chosen by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra to represent Finland at the Nordic Soloist Competition in Bergen (Norway). As soloist he has performed with orchestras in Finland, Lithuania, Portugal and Estonia. After the Tchaikovsky Competition maestro Valery Gergiev invited him to his festival in Mikkeli to play Tchaikovsky’s Rococo variations with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra.
Jan-Paul Roozeman (piano)
Jan-Paul Roozeman (1994) began his piano studies at the Espoo Music institute. From 2005 until 2014 he studied at the Sibelius Academy with professors Jussi Siirala and Erik T. Tawaststjerna and in 2014 continued his study at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in the class of Naum Grubert.
In 2009 he was elected 'Young Musician of the Year' by the Pro Musica foundation.
Jan-Paul has performed at many international festivals in various countries, including Estonia, Lithuania, Nagorno Karabakh, Armenia, The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, in recitals, as an orchestra soloist and with chamber music.
He has been awarded prizes in many competitions:
- 2nd prize at the International EPTA Competition, 2010 (Belgium)
- the Grand Prix in the Helmi Vesa Competition (2012)
- 2nd prize in the Ilmari Hannikainen Competition, 2014 (Finland).
In 2015 Jan-Paul performed a recital at the Piano Espoo festival in honour of Sibelius’ 150 year jubilee.
Among the most important performances of 2016 were a concert in the Marinsky-theater in St.Petersburg, a recital in Doesburg, The Netherlands, and concerts at the Turku Music Festival and the Oulunsalo soi –festivals in Finland.
In the 2016-2017 season he will perform in The Netherlands, England, Italy, Finland and Germany.
