Shostakovich wrote his Festive Overture in just 3 days to celebrate the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution: it goes to show it doesn't always take long to write good music! After a effervescent opening, we will perform Sibelius's brilliant and popular Violin Concerto. We are delighted to welcome a new soloist, Christopher Jones, who performs with the Gildas Quartet and Manchester Camerata.
The second half of the concert will comprise Nielsen's Symphony No 5, which focuses on the contrast between good and evil/light and dark.
There is a free pre-concert talk at 6.45 delivered by our conductor, Jonathan Lo, so come along to learn a little more about the music before you sit back and enjoy the performance.
