An all-Russian evening of musical storytelling with conductor Jakub Hruša, joined on stage by world-leading cellist Steven Isserlis.
One of the most distinguished musicians active today, Steven Isserlis is loved by audiences across the world. A lifelong ambassador for music, he has devoted his life to his instrument as well as supporting musical education for all. Tonight, he performs a heartfelt piece well-suited to his graceful style - Kabalevsky’s Second Cello Concerto grows from a delicate beginning into a warm musical embrace.
One of the best-loved pieces of orchestral music, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade tells the magical tale of the learned princess who uses her storytelling wit to outsmart the murderous sultan. Heavy brass signal his arrival, while her theme is an intoxicating melody for solo violin that grows across the orchestra as we become drawn into her tales – of Sinbad’s fantastical voyages, of a young prince and princess brought together by the power of two genies, and many more.
