Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra at the 2019 Bury St Edmunds Festival presents a programme of Mahler in his most intimate mood and Tchaikovsky at his most imposing. Two outstanding young soloists showcase their remarkable talents in this varied afternoon of great music.
The most restrained of all Mahler's symphonies, the Fourth is a cascade of seductively lovely melodies that begins with sleigh bells and ends with a child's folk song. In between is one of the most tender and soulful of slow movements which nevertheless rises to the Symphony's greatest moment of grandeur.
The majestic opening chords of Tchaikovsky's First Concerto make one of the most famous openings in romantic music. Two of the great nineteenth-century pianists disagreed about this music. Although he later relented, Rubinstein's initial reaction was scathing. Hans Von Bulow was fulsome. Started in 1874, the concerto was revised twice before reaching its definitive version - a version which, many years later, became the first classical music to sell a million records. Von Bulow's view has prevalied!
