Rich tones and soaring melodies shine through in this dramatic programme from Sir Antonio Pappano.
The operatic Messa di Gloria was composed when Puccini was just 18. Audacious, colourful and unpredictable, the piece opens with a radiant string introduction, and explodes into the intense melodic and rhythmic energy that characterise much of the piece. The LSO is backed by the full might of the London Symphony Chorus for this magnificent choral work.
Messa di Gloria echoes the work of Puccini’s hero Verdi, whose acrobatic and dynamic String Quartet is also performed in this concert. Vigorous and urgent, the piece is less well-known than Verdi’s operas, but retains their sense of passion and drama.
