Durham Cathedral Choir is joined by the Avison Ensemble, for a festive period instrument performance of Handel's famous oratorio. Soloists will be from within Durham Cathedral Choir, the orchestra is led by Pavlo Beznosiuk.
Handel composed his Messiah in 1741 and continued to work on it after its initial performance, finally arriving at the version we know today in 1754. Impressive solo arias, including Ev'ry valley shall be exalted and Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion are interspersed with compelling choral sections telling the story of Jesus' birth, life, death, resurrection, and final victory over sin and death. And of course the rousing Hallelujah Chorus is one of the most famous pieces of Baroque choral music, and by far the most widely-known section of Messiah.
Complete your festive experience with a special pre-concert meal in the Undercroft Restaurant at 5pm. £25 per person, including a mulled wine reception. Can be booked at the same time as booking tickets for the concert.
