This concert celebrates the creativity, innovation, and vision of women musicians and women composers. The concert’s title Invisibility references firstly the struggle for recognition that women musicians have faced over many years (such as Rebecca Clarke, who faced rumours that she didn’t exist and that her name was a pseudonym for Ernest Bloch!). Secondly Invisibility is the title of Liza Lim’s solo cello piece, which explores a cultural concept of ‘hiddenness’ in Aboriginal dreamtime and related aesthetic qualities of shimmer and fluctuating texture.
The concert will be presented by Australians Coral Lancaster (cellist) and Wendy Hiscocks (pianist and composer). An eclectic selection of cello and piano music will be performed from the Romantic era to the present day, including the world première of Wendy Hiscock's Songlines, and the UK première of Ann Carr-Boyd's Beneath the Yellow Moon.
The first half of the programme will explore music of women composers from the 19th and early 20th centuries, many of whom faced prejudice in a music industry mostly dominated by men. A brief reflection on the experiences and life of each person in the programme will be given, including pioneering women cellists Lisa Cristiani and Guilhermina Suggia.
The second half of the concert features music of four living women composers, including three Australians, each with a highly individual stylistic approach. The importance of Australian cellist and ethnomusicologist Alice Moyle will be acknowledged, as well as the women singers of the Yolgnu group in northern Australia, who were the inspiration for Liza Lim's solo cello work Invisibility.
The performers gratefully acknowledge the support of CAM (Celebrating Australian Music) and publisher Wirripang in presenting the concert.
