The Dante String Quartet last played in Dorking in 2015, when they gave an impressive series of three concerts covering a wide range of music, and it is a great pleasure to welcome them back again. The quartet was founded in 1995 in Cornwall and they chose the name of Dante to convey the idea of a great and challenging journey. They are currently focussing on the quartets of Beethoven and Shostakovich. Their many recordings have met with great acclaim and they are winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for chamber music. The central thread linking their three programmes is formed by the three ‘Razumovsky’ quartets of Beethoven. In this concert they will play the first Razumovsky quartet, along with an autobiographical quartet by Smetana and a quartet by Haydn.
