The critically acclaimed Oxfordshire Early Music Trio Musical Banquet are making an eagerly anticipated first visit to Guildford Cathedral at 11.15am on Thursday 15th November 2018 and performing a Coffee Concert, in aid of Cathedral Funds. Step back in time 400 years to hear the group serve up a delectable menu of musical delicacies with vocal and instrumental works interspersed with colourful period anecdotes.
Standing in a commanding spot on Stag Hill — so named because the Kings of England used to hunt there — Guildford Cathedral was consecrated on 17th May 1961 in the presence of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and the Archbishop of Canterbury . Today, the seat of the Bishop of Guildford, the Cathedral represents a powerful mix of Gothic and Modernist architecture, with its solid red brick construction made from clay taken from the hill on which it stands. The building of Guildford Cathedral was a remarkable achievement beginning in 1936, when Britain was struggling to emerge from economic recession and war clouds loomed over Europe. When construction resumed in 1954 cash was raised through a ‘Buy a Brick’ fundraising campaign which saw more than 200,000 people became brick-givers. Each brick cost 2s 6d and entitled the buyer to sign their name on the brick. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip both signed bricks, which can now be seen on display inside the cathedral.
This glorious building provides a fitting backdrop for an unusual and highly entertaining opportunity to experience works performed on period instruments combined with Countertenor voice much as the 17th and 18th century audience might have heard them. With plenty of surprises along the way, the short concert will be presented in the group's characteristically innovative, energetic and imaginative style and the special 'morning coffee menu' includes some sweet treats from one of England's finest composers, Henry Purcell and a tribute to the Scots poet and songwriter Robert Burns. A tempting indulgence for all musical gastronomes!
Coffee will be served from 10.30am., and admission is free including a complimentary souvenir programme, with donations to the work of Guildford Cathedral greatly appreciated. Afterwards there will be an opportunity to meet the musicians and purchase lunch from the Cathedral’s excellent Café Restaurant.
Musical Banquet's vibrant and energetic performances have delighted critics and audiences alike:

You remain unique and indefatigable (and very digestible!’)’
Come along and experience for yourself this 'Feast for the Ears'!
