What happens when great music is played by new instrumental combinations? Three famous masterpieces are presented in unfamiliar versions in this programme. Each piece has a different story: Dimitri Sitkovetsky arranged Bach’s Goldberg Variations, a keyboard work, for string trio in the late twentieth century. Beethoven himself re-scored his piano sonata for string quartet, and Brahms’s string quintet in F minor is an early version of a work that would later find its place, via a second version for two pianos, as his mighty piano quintet.
