The true start of Christmas in Bath, when Bath Bach Choir takes to the stage in St Michael's Without and in the beautiful Regency Pump Room to perform three nights of carols and Christmas music, old and new. The tradition began in 1947 with the choir's founder, Cuthbert Bates, who had the Pump Room transformed from being a tea room into a recital auditorium, and presented the city with a Christmas programme from his brand new choir. Under Musical Director Nigel Perrin, the concerts have become a much-loved and anticipated event, involving audience participation, local children's choirs, a virtuoso soloist from Wells Cathedral School and incidental lively banter from the conductor. The programme is always a charming mix of well-known carols, jazz and gospel arrangements and the pure sound of the choir singing some simply beautiful Christmas music. A feast for all with mulled wine available.
