Poppea, mistress of the Emperor, seeks the crown. Spurred on by ambition and love, she attempts to persuade her lover to set his wife aside – despite warnings of the Empress’s revenge. Written shortly before the composer’s death, the remarkable L’incoronazione di Poppea was Monteverdi’s last opera and is considered his finest achievement. With a focus on real-life emotions, this is a striking opera about love and lust amidst conflicting morality.
Poppea is Longborough’s Young Artist production for 2018, part of a programme to provide world-class performance opportunities to singers and players at the beginning of their careers.
Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
Part of Longborough's 2018 season, which also includes Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer, Verdi's La traviata, and Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos.
