Presented by Beirut’s premiere cultural centre, Selecteum des arts et des sciences, Quatuor Musique del Tempo perform two masterpieces for string quartet in the baroque splendour of St James's Piccadilly. Although Mozart's Dissonance Quartet, and Grieg's String Quartet No 1 sound ravishing to audiences today, the innovative harmonies and technical demands of both works caused consternation to the works' publishers when they were written: in the 1780s, Italian music dealers returned the scores of Mozart's work to the publishers, thinking that the audacious harmonies in the first movement must have been a mistake; and in 1878 Grieg's quartet was initially rejected by his publisher who thought the double-stopping was too challenging and that the work would need to be rewritten for a bigger ensemble. Happily, both composers stood their ground and the works have stood the test of time. Join us tonight for a free performance of two great works in a beautiful setting, by this internationally acclaimed ensemble.
