French cellist Gautier Capuçon is internationally acclaimed for his deeply expressive musicianship and exuberant virtuosity. He makes his debut in Oxford playing a work close to his heart - Haydn's joyful first cello concerto.
Oxford's famous Sheldonian Theatre once hosted Haydn who received an honorary degree from the University. His 22nd symphony was nicknamed 'The Philosopher' due to its pensive and thoughtful nature, which gradually gives way to higher spirits. Surrounding the Haydn are two of Mozart's youthful works from the years 1772-1774; the D major Divertimento and Symphony No. 29, written when he was just 16 and 18 years of age respectively. Across a number of concerts this season, Marios Papadopoulos will explore the genius and mastery of form that shines through in the music of Mozart.
