Get ready to pull a cracker as the Hallé’s genial Associate Conductor, Stephen Bell, returns with a stocking full of festive favourites to get you into the Christmas spirit. He’s joined by Welsh soprano, Elin Manahan Thomas, whose angelic voice was heard by millions around the world at the opening ceremony of the London Paralympics in 2012. Elin is a peerless performer in Baroque and Classical repertoire, so amongst the treats on offer in this concert are audience favourites by Handel and Mozart, whose early masterpiece Exsultate Jubilate was written to celebrate the vocal dexterity of one of the composer’s favoured opera stars.
There’s plenty of seasonal orchestral classics to enjoy courtesy of the Hallé, from Engelbert Humperdinck’s warm-hearted operatic overture to Hansel and Gretel to Alan Silvestri’s magical score to the hit Christmas film, The Polar Express. And if you’re looking forward to the winter sports ahead, then you can speed over the ice with Waldteufel’s Skater’s Waltz and hurtle down the slopes to the sound of Sam Fonteyn’s Pop looks Bach, better known as the theme to Ski Sunday.
