Concert Title: Mozart and Berlioz
Performers: Timothy Redmond, conductor
The Cambridge Philharmonic Society
Programme :Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
1:Mass in C minor, 'The Great', K427
 Hector Berlioz
2:Symphonie Fantastique, Op 14
Note: Mystery surrounds the composition of Mozart’s greatest mass setting. In a letter to his father, Mozart described the mass as being a wedding gift for Constanze (the florid soprano solos were written for her to perform) but like the Requiem, the C minor Mass was left incomplete, and puzzlingly was only performed once in the composer’s lifetime.

The season finishes with music’s most famous representation of obsessive love. In 1827 Berlioz saw the Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson as Ophelia; he was instantly and utterly smitten. He wrote her endless love letters, none of which she answered, and so he turned to music to express his unrequited love.

Let me tell you, you don't know what love is...For you, it's not that rage, that fury, that delirium which takes possession of all one's faculties, which renders one capable of anything... - Berlioz, letter to a friend, 1827.
