Wimbledon Choral Society Michael Ashcroft, conductor Elizabeth Weisberg, soprano Jacques Imbrailo, baritone
Programme
:
Johannes Brahms
1:
Ein Deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), Op 45
Note:
After an absence of several years, Wimbledon Choral Society returns to this beautiful central venue to perform Brahms’ A German Requiem using the composer’s own arrangement for piano and four hands. We are delighted to welcome back Elizabeth Weisberg as the soprano soloist and, for the first time, Jacques Imbrailo as the baritone.
Written between 1865-1868, this work was performed in various stages of completeness during this period but it wasn’t until February 1869 in Liepzig that the final seven-movement version saw the light of day. It is thought that the death of Brahms’s mother in 1865 and that of Robert Schumann in 1856 were the key influences and motivation for Brahms’ putting pen to paper.
Unlike many of those written by other composers which use the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass as the source of the text, Brahms’ version is based on the German Luther Bible.
