1:Elijah, Op 70
Note: This major choral work was composed by Mendelssohn in homage to his baroque heroes, Bach and Handel. He was instrumental in bringing Bach's music back into the popular domain. The text for Elijah was written originally in German but he switched to English when commissioned by the Birmingham Festival to write an oratorio.

We are delighted to have James Rutherford sing the role of Elijah. This will be the last major large-scale concert in Guildford Cathedral conducted by Michael Ashcroft who has been our Musical Director for 30 years and who stands down at the end of this season.
