| Note: | |
The Madonna (as opposed to pop musician Madonna) has been inspiring musicians for centuries and the resourceful Epsom Chamber Choir is performing a concert in her honour. The choir will be celebrating over 500 years of music written in praise of the Virgin Mary.
The programme has been devised by the Choir’s Guest Conductor Richard Semmens. He has delved back as far as the 16th Century to find one of the earliest settings of the Magnificat by the English composer Robert Parsons. He will also be making good use of the vast lofty spaces of St Martin’s Church to help recreate the soundscapes of two Italian based 16th Century composers, Victoria and Palestrina, who wrote their music for buildings such as St Mark’s in Venice. As they follow a musical trail through the centuries, taking in composers such as Poulenc and Stanford, the choir also includes works from the last 20 years. Not to be missed is the astonishingly beautiful Magnificat by Arvo Pärt.
Richard Semmens said I’m delighted to have this opportunity to work with this talented group of singers. The scope of the programme means that the choir will be able to show off its ability to sing a broad range of styles. To add to the challenge, all of the music is unaccompanied and some is for double choir.´ |
