Almost called Missa Solemnis, until Beethoven got in first by a few weeks, the Mass in A flat took Schubert nearly seven years of writing and rewriting until he was happy to submit it. In his short lifespan of only 31 years, Schubert’s output was phenomenal (almost a thousand items) and yet his attention to detail was immaculate. This Mass stands out as an example of his mastery of writing appropriate music to suit carefully selected texts. This will be complemented by the lightly orchestrated Symphony No 5 in the first half of the programme. Included in the evening's programme will be Handel's Gloria sung by the outstanding soprano, Elizabeth Weisberg. Only discovered in 2001, this work really tests the soloist's versatility and articulation. For Wimbledon Choral Society and the New Queen's Hall Orchestra, it's a welcome return to the wonderful Concert Hall of the Royal College of Music. |
