Note: Vivaldi wrote his Gloria, as so much of his sacred choral work, for the female choir of the Venetian Ospedale della Pieta for foundlings, where he worked for most of his life. Its nine movements range over a variety of styles, tempi, tonalities and moods for soloists and chorus.

Buxtehude was the great precursor of Bach, as a composer of cantatas and of organ music in the North German tradition. The young Bach is alleged even to have walked the 200 miles from Arnstadt to Lubeck to hear him play. Membra Jesu Nostri is a cycle of cantatas for five part choir and soloist, set to a meditative, late mediaeval Cistercian text. Each part in the cycle is a meditation on Christ’s body during the crucifixion : feet, hands, side, breast, heart and face.

NLC are delighted to welcome Denise Leigh, winner of Operatunity (Channel 4/ENO), as she joins soloists from the choir and an orchestra of period instruments in the wonderful acoustic of St Jude's.
