Programme :John Gay
1:The Beggar's Opera
Note: John Gay uses opera ironically; it is really a play with 69 short songs, composed as a reaction against and comment upon the dominance of Handelian Italian opera in London's musical life. Handel's hugely successful London opera Rinaldo is about an undesirable love affair between a high and mighty hero and heroine, whereas Gay depicts the London low life of thieves, robbers, ladies of the town etc. and Weill, the anti-hero, Mack the Knife. The Beggar's Opera is a satire, centred upon the actions and dialogue of criminal characters who represent the corrupt behaviour and low moral standards of politicians and the upper classes, especially the Whig Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole!
