Wimbledon Choral Society and the New Queen's Hall Orchestra return to this splendid cathedral venue following their critically acclaimed performance of Verdi's Requiem in 2004. For Berlioz' mighty Te Deum they will be joined by a boys chorus drawn from highly accomplished choirs in three south and south-west London schools, together with Norman Harper on the organ and the young Irish tenor, Robin Tritschler. In a letter to Franz Liszt, even Berlioz admitted that the work ...was colossal. My God, if only you had been there. I assure you that it is a tremendous work, the final movement surpasses all the enormities of which I am guilty up to now. Given Camille Saint-Saëns' mastery of the organ, it should hardly be surprising that one of his best-loved orchestral pieces is the Symphony No 3 in C Minor, known as the Organ Symphony. This work will form the first half of the concert with Norman Harper making best use of Guildford Cathedral's fine instrument, especially in the familiar final movement. |
