Scottish Chamber Choir

The Scottish Chamber Choir, under guest director Walter Thomson, presents a programme of glorious a cappella choral music, centred on a masterpiece of polyphonic and antiphonal writing – the great six-part motet Tu es Petrus by the Italian Renaissance composer, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. This leads into a performance of the 'parody mass' based on material from the motet.

Adapting the ancient tradition of interspersing the movements of the mass with other liturgical elements, the programme interweaves six motets from the Romantic period. Three, by Anton Bruckner, are masterly settings, demonstrating huge harmonic inventiveness and dynamic range; three are melodic pieces by Giuseppe Verdi, one for female voices only, and all of which are highly personal works of profound beauty.
