American jazz and dance provide the backbone of this programme in music by Gershwin, Bernstein and Richard Rodgers. Samuel Barber's symphony is quite short, and as attractive as you'd expect from a composer of the Adagio for Strings. The trumpet concerto by British composer Richard Rodney Bennett is a jazz-influenced work of both beauty and energy, that should be heard more often!
