Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt was named Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2006, and her army of fans will know that she devoted 2007-08 to performing all of Bach’s 48 Preludes and Fugues around the world. She returns to Manchester in a programme that combines works by the greatest keyboard composers of the Baroque era with two fine sets of variations by Beethoven and Brahms. Brahms’ work is based on a theme from Handel’s first keyboard suite.

‘This is very superior playing indeed: an object lesson in pianistic refinement, tonal, expressive and psychological imagination, and musicianship of the highest order. Hewitt’s tonal palette is vast, exceptionally controlled and never indulged for its own sake.’ Piano Magazine
