St Martin’s Voices are delighted to present two settings of the great hymns of praise, the Te Deum and the Magnificat. The concert begins with Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum, which was written in 1713 to celebrate the Treaty of Utrecht and the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. It is followed by Bach’s 1724 setting of the German-language Magnificat by Martin Luther, and by Haydn’s Te Deum in C, which was commissioned by Empress Marie Therese, the wife of Franz I of Austria in 1799. Tonight’s programme concludes with Bach’s celebrated Magnificat in D, one of the most-loved works of the choral repertoire.
