Tredici concerts have become well-known for the breadth, as well as the beauty, of their repertoire – most of it sung a cappella but on this special occasion, and for the first time, we are performing with orchestral accompaniment.

The main work is Handel’s glorious setting of Psalm 110, Dixit Dominus. Of all his choral pieces this 5-part motet is one of the earliest - written 35 years before Messiah - yet most colourful, with imagery ranging from shattered heads to seductively babbling brooks.

Mozart had reached the ripe old age of 18 when he composed his Missa Brevis in D, K194. It was written for the Archbishop of Salzburg and is a miracle of (tasteful) compression.

This special concert also includes Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir (Psalm 112) one of the most famous examples of the stile concertato, written at the height of his powers c. 1630, and, from three centuries later, Edgar Bainton’s ecstatic setting of words from the Book of Revelations, And I saw a new heaven.
