Maurice Durufle wrote his now famous Requiem in 1947, just after the end of World War Two. The subtle and expressive work is interwoven with beautiful Gregorian melodies and modal harmonies.

The Requiem is preceded by a number of shorter works commemorating war and peace. Elgar’s Lux aeterna is a choral arrangement of ‘Nimrod’ from his Enigma Variations. This is followed by Holst’s unaccompanied Nunc dimittis, written in 1915 during World War One. Frederick Kelly, whose Prelude for Organ will be performed, was an Australian and British musician who died in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The first half of the concert concludes with movements from Parry’s Songs of Farewell, composed between 1916 and 1918.
