  1. Overture, from The Bartered Bride - Bedrich Smetana
  2. The Banks of Green Willow - George Butterworth
  3. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor Op 16 - Edvard Grieg
  4. Symphony No 5 in C minor Op 67 - Ludwig van Beethoven

The exuberant Overture to The Bartered Bride by Smetana provides a sparkling opening to the concert and concludes beautifully to lead into Butterworth’s The Banks of Green Willow. Butterworth was an English composer; in The Banks of Green Willow, he has woven together strands of English folksong to create a gentle, pastoral landscape.

The centrepiece of tonight’s programme is without doubt one of the most popular works ever written for the piano: Grieg’s Piano Concerto. Its dramatic opening leads into rich, lyrical melodies and passages of showstopping virtuosity; it will be brought to life by pianist Alexandra Dariescu, BBC Music Magazines ‘Rising Star’ in 2013 and winner of the 2013 Woman of the Future Award in the Arts and Culture category.

The Orchestra concludes with Beethoven’s legendary Symphony No 5, which begins with some of the most famous bars ever written.
