  3. Magnificat - John Rutter

The Choral Society celebrates its 34th annual concert with an exciting programme of choral music by 2 english composers. Elgar's Te Deum and Benedictus was composed in 1897 and is a setting of the familiar words from the book of common prayer arranged for choir and orchestra. The Rutter is a musical setting of the biblical canticle Magnificat and was completed in 1990. It is in 7 movements and is set for soprano, choir and orchestra. It is based on the text in latin, interspersed with an english poem on Marian themes Of a Rose, a lovely Rose, the beginning of the Sanctus and a prayer to Mary. The music includes elements of latin american music. The choir is delighted to be accompanied again by the Symphony Orchestra of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and will be conducted by our Musical Director Andrew Nunn.

The orchestral part of the programme is a Mozart violin concert (the Strassburg), which will be performed by the winner of the concerto competition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Kristina Lee, and will be conducted by a talented young conductor, Kerem Hasan.

Thomas Coats Memorial Church is a beautiful setting for such wonderful music
