The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra Op 34 - Benjamin Britten
Following a children’s concert during the day organised in conjunction with local schools and the Unicorn Theatre, the Orpheus Sinfonia will present an evening concert with some additions.
Benjamin Britten’s A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, takes the form of a set of variations based upon a rousing theme by Henry Purcell, the music takes listeners on a tour initially around the various orchestral sections and then around every single instrument of the orchestra. Finally, a dazzling three-minute fugue concludes the experience with a theme being passed rapidly around every single instrument followed by an inspiring brass fanfare.
To compliment this great work, the concert opens with Bernstein’s lively Candide Overture with colourful excerpts from Ravel’s The Mother Goose and Frank Bridge’s Summer.
