For some, it is the ultimate challenge for an orchestra, for others, one of the defining moments of twentieth-century music, after which nothing could ever be the same. Stravinsky’s revolutionary ballet continues to be a source of controversy nearly 100 years on. Elgar’s concerto, written for Fritz Kreisler, also challenges both orchestra and conductor in ways that can be wholly unexpected.
