Symphony No 3 in F Op 90 - Johannes Brahms
The Bristol Classical Players’ second season, following on from their successful Beethoven cycle, focuses on the four symphonies of Johannes Brahms, regarded by many as Beethoven's heir.
The four concerts each place one of Brahms's symphonies alongside works by his friends, contemporaries and influences and will be given by a chamber orchestra of a size Brahms would have recognised from his work in Meiningen. The greater prominence a smaller orchestra gives to wind and brass parts allows Brahms's music to be heard in all its intricate glory without any of the heaviness that is so often a feature of modern performances.
The third concert in the series places Brahms's most songful symphony, with its nostalgic third movement waltz, alongside the great piano concerto by his close friend Schumann and the much-loved seascape overture by Mendelssohn, whose own works and whose research into earlier music Brahms admired intensely.
