The Passion of Christ - George Frideric Handel
The concert will last approximately 70 minutes.
The Community Choral Society presents a rare performance of the Denys Darlow edition of Handel's early masterwork The Passion of Christ, published by OUP. Dating from 1716, according to the editor the music is mature in style, rich in invention and full of moments of great beauty and drama. With a libretto from a poem by B H Brockes, the work tells the story of the Passion from a very human and emotional standpoint, in a highly dramatic presentation. It is operatic in style and a forerunner to the Handel oratorio.
David Houlder has held the position of Sub-Organist of Liverpool Cathedral for over 20 years, and now combines this with a freelance career, both as recitalist and accompanist. He has played almost all the cathedral organs in Great Britain and appears in concert regularly with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. Simon Lindley has pursued parallel careers as organist, accompanist, composer and author as well as conductor and choral music director. He is Music Director of St Peter's Singers and the world renowned Leeds Parish Church Choir, and conductor of Sheffield Bach Society. He is also Organist of Leeds Parish Church and Leeds Town Hall, and Senior Assistant Music Officer for Leeds City Council.
