Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem was initially commissioned by the Japanese government in 1940, but later rejected due to Britten’s use of titles that referred to Christian liturgy. Often regarded as his unofficial fifth piano concerto, the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini met with immense success upon its premiere in 1934, is now one of Rachmaninov’s most enduringly popular works.
