Out Hear - Exploring Sound and Time

A concert celebrating the extremities of sonic investigation: from the raw and compelling sound-world of Xenakis, via the refined textures or Rebecca Saunders and finishing with a meditative, micro-looping large-scale work especially written for the group by Bryn Harrison.

+ - is an Anglo/Belgium octet committed to presenting new work alongside landmark modern repertoire. Formed in 2003 by Joanna Bailie and Matthew Shlomowitz, + - is distinguished by its interest in avant-garde, conceptual, and experimental open instrumentation pieces such as Stockhausen's 1963 classic, from which the group takes its name.

+- has performed at the Borealis (Bergen), Huddersfield, Transit (Leuven) and Ultima (Oslo) festivals; two concerts at the ICA as part of the Talk Show exhibition and Calling Out of Context festival; and, as the resident ensemble of the multidisciplinary arts platform Rational Rec, at the Southbank Centre, Spitalfields Festival, Bethnal Green Working Men's Club and Whitechapel Gallery.

Composers who have written pieces for the group include Laurence Crane, Bryn Harrison, Stefan Van Eycken, David Helbich, Michael Finnissy, James Saunders, Joanna Bailie, Trond Reinholdtsen, Damien Ricketson, Øyvind Torvund and Erik Ulman.
