The critically acclaimed Oxfordshire Early Music trio Musical Banquet will be appearing at St Andrew's Church, Rushmere St Andrew, Suffolk on Saturday 20 October 2012 performing a special Gala Charity Concert in aid of Church Funds. Despite being on the edge of the Ipswich suburban area this church has a delightful village setting, looking out across open fields and we step back in time 400 years to hear the group serve up a delectable menu of musical treats, including vocal and instrumental works by Purcell, Gibbons and their English and European contemporaries, interspersed with colourful period anecdotes.
The original medieval building, originally constructed on Saxon foundations, was entirely rebuilt in 1861 by local architect Edward Hakewill due to the fabric of the building being in a ‘ruinous condition’. In 1968 a magnificent extension (the first of its kind in Suffolk) was added, to a design by the architect George Pace, who rebuilt Llandaff Cathedral. With its juxtaposition of light and dark, between Victorian sentiment and modernist rationalism the church forms a fitting backdrop for Musical Banquet’s ‘time travel’.
Tonight is an unusual and highly entertaining opportunity to experience works performed on period instruments combined with Countertenor voice much as the 17th and 18th century audience would have heard them. An eclectic selection of music will include a tribute to the poet and songwriter Robert Burns, love songs from C17 Spain accompanied on Baroque Guitar and excerpts from the semi-operas of Henry Purcell. With plenty of surprises along the way, the evening will be presented in the trio’s characteristically innovative and imaginative style.
During the interval there will be an opportunity to meet and talk with the artists.
Come along, support the church's fundraising activity, and treat yourself to a 'Feast for your Ears'!
