Our programme is a happy mixture of music from both sides of the English Channel, featuring works from the late Renaissance and the 20th century.

The main work is Vaughan Williams’s beautiful Mass in G Minor, scored for a cappella double choir and four soloists. The composer’s life-long fascination with Britain’s musical heritage finds eloquent expression in a setting whose musical language borrows much from the Renaissance.

We turn from the sacred to the secular with the only music Debussy ever wrote for unaccompanied voices. It has often been said of Debussy that his music mirrors the achievements of his Impressionist artist contemporaries.

Certainly he has painted three vivid pictures in his “Trois chansons”. Earlier French music is supplied by Guillaume Bouzignac, whose motets are full of heartfelt expression.

We include four English motets from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. These pieces are for the most part exuberant, even dramatic. But Weelkes, the temperamental master from Chichester, balances this with a desperate lament.
