The Australian String Quartet founded in 1985 is, very unusually, a full-time salaried group, in residence at the University of Adelaide and concentrating entirely on performing the quartet repertoire to the highest international standards. It tours widely to capital centres and regional communities in Australia, appears at international festivals and has toured extensively throughout the UK, Europe, New Zealand and Asia in recent years, recording regularly for commercial release. In 2012 it tours five Australian capital cities, Italy, Switzerland, other European centres and the UK, and launches its String Quartet Mentoring Program across Australia.
Its members have on loan three Guadagnini instruments and a Grancino cello.
