  1. Prelude (Dawn over the Moscow River) from 'Khovanshchina' - Modest Mussorgsky, orchestrated by Dmitri Shostakovich
  2. Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Op 35 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky
  3. Pictures at an Exhibition - Modest Mussorgsky, arranged by Maurice Ravel

Pictures at an Exhibition, written to reflect the exhibition in memory of Mussorgsky’s close friend and architect-painter Victor Hartmann, is Mussorgsky’s best-known, best-loved work. Each miniature depicts a new scene, gradually covering a patchwork of contrasting episodes, linked by the recurring theme (the Promenade) representing the viewer walking between the pictures. Before this, the introduction to one of his last great projects, an historical opera which he did not finish (but Rimsky-Korsakov did). Separating them is Tchaikovsky’s great Violin Concerto – a graceful duet between an effortlessly beautiful, song-like violin part floating gently over a more robust, energetic orchestra.
