  1. The Canterbury Pilgrims - Sir George Dyson

This concert provides a rare opportunity to hear Sir George Dyson's choral masterpiece. 'The Canterbury Pilgrims' is a setting of the Prologue to Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', in which the diverse characters about to start on the pilgrimage are described. We hear about the Knight, a worthy man, with a catalogue of battles and actions. The Shipman is described in a song with a rolling rhythm, to reflect his life at sea. The mournful Clerk of Oxenford, the Merchant with his forked beard, and the Poor Parson are given tunes and settings that bring to life Chaucer's descriptions. The Chorus and Orchestra are joined by soprano, tenor and bass soloists for this concert.
