The critically acclaimed Oxfordshire Early Music trio Musical Banquet will be appearing at St Frideswide's Church, New Osney, Oxford on Thursday 26 April 2012 performing a special Gala Charity Concert in aid of church funds. Dedicated to the patroness saint of Oxford and close to the city centre, St Frideswide's enjoys a picturesque waterside setting betwen two back streams of the Thames and is perhaps best known for the Alice Door at north east end of the nave, carved by Alice (in Wonderland) Liddell. Step back in time 400 years to hear the group serve up a delectable menu of musical treats including vocal and instrumental works by Purcell, Gibbons and their English and European contemporaries, interspersed with colourful period anecdotes.
This is an unusual and highly entertaining opportunity to experience works performed on period instruments combined with Countertenor voice much as the 17th and 18th century audience would have heard them. An eclectic selection of music will include a tribute to the poet and songwriter Robert Burns, love songs from C17 Spain accompanied on Baroque Guitar and songs from the semi-operas of Henry Purcell. With plenty of surprises along the way, the evening will be presented in the trio’s characteristically innovative and imaginative style.
During the interval a complimentary drink will be served and there will be an opportunity to meet and talk with the artists.
