About the King Charles Room and Winchester Guildhall

The foundation stone of the current Guildhall was laid in 1871, on the site of an estate granted by Alfred the Great to his wife Ealswith one thousand years earlier. It was designed in the Gothic revival style by the Hastings architectural firm Jeffrey and Skiller and it housed the Police and Fire stations as well as the Law courts Mayoral and council offices. It also boasted a superb Assembly Room for meetings, gatherings and concerts.

In 1892 the Guildhall was extended by local architect John Colson who added a new public “banqueting room” behind the Court of Sessions. The banqueting room was later named The King Charles Hall as a result of the large works of art depicting both King Charles 1st and King Charles 2nd. As important works of art in the city's collection, these had formerly been displayed in the temporary “Guildhall” which was based in the St Johns Rooms opposite the current Guildhall. Many of these have remained on public display in the hall since it’s opening in 1892.

The magnificent King Charles Hall, with its superb acoustics and elegant décor, makes an excellent venue for chamber music. Grand, yet intimate, it recalls the musical entertainments in European courts and palaces of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the great Victorian salon concerts.

All of the council-run city car parks are free for up to four hours' parking after 6.00pm. The closest car park is Colebrook Street Car Park (SO23 9LH), which is located just behind the Guildhall.
