Mozart: Lucio Silla | Classical Opera

Following the tremendous acclaim for Classical Opera's 2011 concert performances of Le nozze di Figaro and Il re pastore, the company returns to Cadogan Hall for a rare concert performance of Mozart's Lucio Silla. It will be the first UK performance of this magnificent but still neglected opera since the last millennium.

Lucio Silla is the last and greatest of the three operas which Mozart wrote for Italy in the early 1770s, containing a wonderful sequence of virtuosic and emotionally charged arias, culminating in the celebrated "Pupille amate" and the haunting "Fra i pensier più funesti". The role of Giunia, in particular, contains some of the most virtuosic and technically challenging vocal music Mozart ever wrote, and Mozart's father wrote of her Act Two aria, "Wolfgang has put passages in it which are new and quite especially and astonishingly difficult".

This performance showcases a superb cast of young singers, comprising some of the UK's most outstanding up-and-coming talent, and Ian Page conducts the company's vibrant period-instrument orchestra.
