The historic ambience of Edinburgh's Canongate Kirk is an appropriate setting for the premiere of Tomnaverie. Commissioned by the MCO, it is based on the melody Tullyveery by Aboyne fiddler Paul Anderson, and captures perfectly the mournful and eerie atmosphere of the forests and stone rings of North East Scotland. Peter Evans returns to play and direct Mozart's D minor masterpiece, a work he first performed with the Orchestra in its inaugural year, 1972.
For 40 years, the Meadows Chamber Orchestra, under its principal conductor and musical adviser Peter Evans, has performed regularly and with critical acclaim to audiences in Edinburgh and beyond. A tradition of imaginative programming and exciting performances has given the Orchestra a unique place in Scottish musical life. In recognition of its promotion of contemporary music, the Orchestra has received several Awards for Enterprise from the Performing Rights Society and generous financial support from the PRS Foundation. In recent years the Meadows has twice broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
Despite their track record, reputation and consistency of performance, the musicians of Edinburgh’s Meadows Chamber Orchestra continually provoke surprise.
